Figure Eights

Today, in the summer’s morning quiet
you surprised me.
You drifted by on your dun colt,
easing into a lope, figure-eighting silver sagebrush,
stopping and backing
patting and praising,
a reining pattern on the banks of Sunday Creek.
  The dun colt’s tail swished lightly at flies;
his ears watched the cottonwoods
at each pause.
I would have called out a greeting to you,
but I hesitated.
You turned and loped toward home,
a brown-red rocker melting into the trees.

From the veil of green, metal cracking metal,
a steel post shatters slumbering sandstone
as you begin the work
your father sent you to do.
I retreat to the meditations of my hear
having been touched
but regretfully not touching.

I hope you don’t mind, Jess,
that I watched you.
