"I know that 'horse' had to be my first word."

At 12 years old all my dreams and wishes came true when “Shaniko” jumped out of a stock truck and into my life. She cost $200. At three years old and advertised as green broke, we covered a lot of miles. I rode her bareback the first three months of our partnership until my aunt’s saddle arrived from Iowa in the car trunk of a visiting relative. While people teased me and said that I would eventually give up the horses for boys, I kept reading, riding and learning all I could about horses. My goal was to become an excellent horsewoman; I continue to pursue that goal today. I also enjoy reading, writing poetry (they call it “cowboy” poetry) and shooting clay pigeons.
